Natural gas pumps open to public

Newport Beach opened its first natural gas fueling station Wednesday.

The $1-million facility at the General Services Corporation Yard, 592 Superior Ave., allows the city to power its fleet of vehicles with cleaner-burning compressed natural gas, officials said.

The station, which will be open to the public and operate at all hours, was made possible through a partnership between Newport Beach and Clean Energy, an alternative energy transportation company. Newport Beach let Clean Energy build the gas station on city land, rent free. In return, the city will receive a nickel for every gallon sold there, according to Mayor Keith Curry.

The city paid nothing for the station, officials said.

Newport Little League team to host fundraiser to replace stolen equiptment

Colby Bock, founder of Colby's Double Plays, has collected baseball gear to donate.

The Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. is taking a less fortunate league under its wing.

Thousands of dollars in equipment was stolen Feb. 5 from the Baldwin Park Little League’s storage facility. The San Gabriel Valley area club cannot afford to replace its bats, gloves, balls and helmets.

To help, the Newport Harbor league volunteered to host a fundraiser at Mariners Park, 1300 Irvine Ave., Newport Beach, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Newport Beach firefighters rescue two scaffold workers

Firefighters on Monday had to rescue two dangling workers, who were doing maintenance on a scaffold along the side of a medical building near Fashion Island, when the swing stage that propped them up malfunctioned.

“It’s great to be able to tell the story,” said Mark Dunn, 44, one of the workers who was saved by his harness after the stand dropped from under him.
