Former teachers’ pretrial delayed again

The pretrial for two former teachers charged with having sexual relations with a 17-year-old boy has been rescheduled for Oct. 27.

Daniel Shepard, who taught at Westminster High School, and his wife Gay Davidson-Shepard, who retired this spring from Mesa View Middle School, appeared at West Justice Center in Westminster for a scheduled hearing Thursday. Attorney John Drummond Barnett, who represents Davidson-Shepard, asked for the postponement on both defendants’ behalf.

“We’re still doing investigating and getting police reports,” Barnett said outside the courtroom.

The couple, who have pleaded not guilty, are charged with oral copulation of a minor, sodomy of a person younger than 18 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Shepard is also charged with possession and control of child pornography.

He faces a maximum sentence of five years in state prison, Davidson-Shepard a maximum of eight years and four months.

Pretrial for former bouncers postponed

The pretrial for two former bouncers charged with assaulting a customer at Hurricanes Bar & Grill has been moved to Sept. 29.

Ivan Alvarez, 23, of Garden Grove and Jakob Taylor, 22, of Costa Mesa were scheduled for pretrial Tuesday at West Justice Center in Westminster, but the hearing was postponed to give attorneys on both sides time to look at evidence, Deputy District Attorney Vickie Schneider said.

In addition to the pretrial, Alvarez and Taylor are scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 20.

Alvarez and Taylor pleaded not guilty in July. The alleged victim, Trevor Parrington, has also filed a lawsuit against them and Hurricanes over the November incident, claiming the bouncers assaulted him without provocation and that the restaurant negligently trained and supervised its security guards.

JWA construction costs on supervisors’ agenda

The county Board of Supervisors is set to vote Tuesday on about $11 million worth of work for John Wayne Airport’s improvement project.

A $7-million contract would kick off improvements to existing terminals A and B airline interior spaces and heating/air conditioning systems. Los Angeles-based ICON West, the recommended contractor, would also build interior airline areas in the under-construction Terminal C.

In other items, the board is scheduled to vote on about $4 million in additional work requested by contractors.
