A Tustin Ranch woman accused of murdering her husband and attempting to murder her two sons on Mother’s Day is set to be arraigned Tuesday on additional charges, officials said.

Annamaria Magno Gana, 41, will be charged with another felony count of attempted murder and a special circumstance of lying in wait, in addition to existing felony charges of murder and attempted murder.

She also faces two sentencing enhancements: One for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death, and another for the personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, the Orange County district attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Woman, 93, remains hospitalized after robbery

11:00 am, Jul 5th, 2011 Jamie Rowe Newport Beach News Add a Comment

A 93-year-old woman remained hospitalized Saturday after a robber grabbed her purse and knocked her down in the parking lot of her apartment complex earlier this week.

The woman had been making one of her daily trips to Gelson’s market when the attacker came up from behind, grabbed her purse and shoved her to the ground, her daughter said in an interview.

“They got her purse,” said Christine Lewis of Corona del Mar. Her mother, who preferred to be called by her nickname, Babs, in this article, sustained a broken arm that required surgery, as well as abrasions on her knees and a cut above her left eye.

Bonus payouts to city employees totals $4M

3:45 pm, Jul 1st, 2011 Jamie Rowe News Add a Comment

Editor’s note: The OC Now’s sister publication, the Burbank Leader, filed a public records request, which the city denied, prompting the paper to file a lawsuit, which it won, to get the information for this story.

Hundreds of Burbank city employees have received a collective $4 million in bonuses since July 2007, according to documents the city fought in court to keep out of public view.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge in May ordered city officials to release bonus pay amounts for individual employees to the Burbank Leader, which sued to obtain the information after its public records request was denied under the auspice that it would harm employee morale and violate workplace privacy rules.

Freeway Series?

What happened Friday night at Dodger Stadium looked more like a Sig Alert.

Three players were thrown out at the plate. Two were picked off at first base. Two others were caught stealing.

“This is the most bizarre base-running game I think we’ve seen,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said.

So this is what it has come to in Los Angeles: two former World Series champions playing out the baseball equivalent of a 10-car pileup in a half-empty ballpark.

“It was a circus out there,” Angels pitcher Dan Haren said.

Little Corona lifeguard stand replaced

2:00 pm, Jun 15th, 2011 Jamie Rowe Newport Beach News Add a Comment

Lifeguard Tower 7 on Little Corona Beach was replaced earlier Tuesday.

“The tower is too large to transport in one piece, so the house was taken off of the base and transported in two pieces,” said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman.

Crews spent several hours moving the old tower and putting together the new tower, using bulldozers to move sand to anchor it in place. The old tower 7 will be dismantled and disposed of, Schulz said.

Beach visitors played in the water and watched as the crews moved the towers.

Three taken to the hospital after four-car crash

10:06 am, Jun 9th, 2011 Jamie Rowe Laguna Beach News Add a Comment

Editor’s note: This corrects the headline.

Four cars crashed at North Coast Highway and Emerald Bay, causing both northbound lanes to be closed Thursday morning, according to Laguna Beach police.

Three individuals were transported to Mission Hospital Mission Viejo with unknown injuries, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an e-mail. No arrests have been made.

“I do not have any further status on injuries or how this accident happened,” she wrote.

Northbound traffic was backed up to Cress Street and Emerald Bay was reduced to one lane in both directions, Callus wrote. Tow trucks are on scene and the area should be cleared soon.

Lopez: In Costa Mesa, are extremists playing politics with people’s lives?

5:52 pm, Jun 5th, 2011 Jamie Rowe Thoughts 1 Comment

By Steve Lopez

These are not the best of times to be a public employee in America. From coast to coast, their paychecks, their pensions and their benefits are under attack. To my knowledge, though, no one’s being pummeled like the clock punchers who toil for Costa Mesa in Orange County.

If the City Council gets its way, half the town’s employees will be fired. About 200 pink slips have gone out, and come September, private contractors may be brought in to replace maintenance workers, dispatchers, mechanics, firefighters and other workers providing essential city services.

Councilman Jim Righeimer, whose strafing of public employees helped get him elected last November, told me pensions are rising and revenues are shrinking.
