Former stockbroker convicted of murdering Denver radio host

A former stockbroker was convicted of murder for financial gain in the 2006 shooting death of a popular Denver radio host whose body was found in the waters off Santa Catalina Island, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Steven Bailey Williams, who in the early 1980s was a popular drive-time radio host, was handling his deceased father’s estate when he met Harvey Morrow, who introduced himself as an investment banker from New York who knew his father.

Williams asked Morrow to set up a trust fund for the sale proceeds of the father’s Corona del Mar home, which was valued at more than $1 million and part of an estate worth $2.4 million.

It was that money that led Morrow to slowly bilk Williams and then to kill him, prosecutors said.

Family split over father’s support of killer

Family members of a 17-year-old Crescenta Valley High School student shot to death in 1991 say they disagree with her father’s support of a state decision to grant parole to her killer.

Mark Cosman wrote in support of granting parole to his daughter’s killer, Paul Crowder, a blessing that factored heavily in the decision of the state parole board’s recommendation. But other family members of the slain girl, Berlyn Cosman, say they were never consulted and have initiated a letter-writing campaign to the governor in an effort to stop Crowder’s release.

Crowder was convicted to 15 years to life, plus four years, for shooting Berlyn Cosman in the head on June 1, 1991 as she slept in her room after a prom night party at the Sterling Crown Suites Hotel in Anaheim.

Small Wonders: The highs and lows of the Magic Kingdom

By Patrick Caneday, Glendale News-Press

“I think most of all, what I want Disneyland to be is a happy place where parents and children can have fun together.” — Walt Disney, from the plaque on Partners Statue at Disneyland.

And somehow, that is exactly what happened, despite the very thing Disneyland was meant to serve: people, lots and lots and lots of people.

Not only is Disneyland the happiest place on earth, it is one of the few places on our increasingly overpopulated planet where the H.P.S. — Human Positioning System — of 100,000 people simultaneously goes on the fritz.

Besides Costco on any given Saturday, or the Glendale Galleria the day after Thanksgiving, rarely are you ever among a throng of so many people who have absolutely no idea there are other human beings in their general vicinity.

Voice of OC: Fair Board funds, actions questioned

Norberto Santana Jr. at the Voice of OC tackles what was going on when former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had the Orange County Fairgrounds up for sale.

In addition to cutting more than $30 million in state subsidies for local fairs, Brown has appointed a task force to study how California’s 78 county fairs should operate. The goal of the 28-member panel, according to California Department of Fairs Spokesman Jay Van Rein, is to get a sense of “what are all of the options out there” in terms of governance and funding.

Weak offense puts Angels in infrequently traveled territory

11:55 am, Aug 14th, 2011 Jamie Rowe Countywide Sports Add a Comment

Reporting from Toronto — As the Dodgers prepared for Game 4 of the 1988 World Series, broadcaster Bob Costas said they might have the weakest lineup in Series history. Manager Tom Lasorda told his players and retold the media, an anecdote immortalized by the Dodgers’ victory.

Kirk Gibson was injured but, truth be told, the Dodgers’ offense was not very good that year, even with Gibson winning the National League most valuable player award. The Dodgers scored 3.88 runs per game in the regular season.

That, curiously enough, brings us to the Angels. No team since the 1988 Dodgers has scored fewer than four runs per game and qualified for the playoffs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Get The Ink Out: Circus a welcoming place for kids, parents

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents "Fully Charged" at the Honda Center. (Heinz Kluetmeier, Daily Pilot / July 28, 2011)

Have you been following this “No Kids” movement going across the country? If not, allow me to fill you in.

I first heard about it when Malaysia Airlines banned children from first class on certain flights. Then a Pittsburgh restaurant banned children younger than 6. Finally, an unknown theater had an adults-only screening of the new “Harry Potter” movie.

I get it. You want to fly across the Pacific without your seat’s back being kicked. You want to savor that duck confit without having food flung at you. You want to see how Harry and the gang handle the next adventure in peace.

But if you’re a parent, where can you take the family and not feel like pariah?

The circus, that’s where. And lucky you, it just so happens to be in town — well, the county at least.
