New jet takeoff route prompts noise complaints by neighbors of John Wayne Airport

From the Daily Pilot

While residents of the Bluffs neighborhood in Newport Beach claim that the number of noisy jets flying over their homes hasn’t changed since the Federal Aviation Administration introduced a new takeoff procedure at John Wayne Airport, homeowners in the Irvine Terrace area claim they’ve noticed a big difference.

Residents from the neighborhood on the east side of Newport Bay, which is bordered by Bayside Drive and Pacific Coast Highway, say that many of the jets taking off from John Wayne now turn east directly over their homes.

The FAA disputes these claims.

New flight procedure at JWA doesn’t help noise, residents say

From the Daily Pilot

Residents from Newport Beach’s Bluffs neighborhood complain that a corrected satellite-guided takeoff procedure for jets from John Wayne Airport doesn’t shift noisy air traffic from over their heads as the Federal Aviation Administration said it would.

In theory, the new procedure, called DUUKE TWO, is designed to shift outbound air traffic an eighth of a mile north toward the center of Upper Newport Bay.

Bluffs residents say they still hear constant noise from jets that interrupts their phone conversations and drowns out their favorite TV programs.

Coastal Commission rejects condo development

This apartment building on Carnation Avenue in Corona del Mar will be demolished to make room for a condominium complex.

The California Coastal Commission today rejected plans for a clutch of luxury condominiums on a coastal bluff in Corona del Mar.

The commission vote 5 to 7 against the Aerie project, a 61,700-square-foot project on Carnation Avenue.

The project narrowly won approval from the Newport Beach City Council in July, by a 4-2 vote.

Plans for the eight luxury condominiums include private decks and pools for each unit and an elevator to take cars to underground levels. The Aerie project would replace an existing 14-unit apartment building with an eight-unit luxury condominium complex with six levels that would take up 61,709 square feet at Bayside Place and Carnation Avenue.

Land developer Richard Julian bought the site of a 60-year-old apartment building and house on Carnation Avenue seven years ago with hopes of transforming it into a luxury condominium complex.

The new condominium complex was designed by architect Brion Jeannette, who also designed the 30,000-square-foot Corona del Mar mansion known as the Portabello Estate, which has been valued as high as $75 million.

The funds will allow the school district to complete the construction during the summer, when it won’t interfere with classes and the schools sports programs, Turner said.
