The union that represents Orange County workers urged the closure Tuesday of two adjacent buildings in the city of Orange, one day after soil testing turned up a toxic chemical under one of them.

Speaking at a county supervisors meeting, Lisa Major, assistant general manager for the Orange County Employees Assn., said that over the last eight months, the union has asked the county to evacuate the buildings at 800 and 840 N. Eckoff St. because of workers’ concerns that the air is toxic.

“Our requests have been denied and we have received hollow assurances from agency leadership that the building is safe,” Major told the supervisors.
