Andrew knows four sports

Andrew Albers, a Costa Mesa High junior, is making like Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders as he’s competing in two sports during the spring.

When the school year is over he’ll have had earned varsity letters in four sports: football, basketball, volleyball and track and field.

That’s right when the 6-foot-7 1/2, 265-pound middle blocker isn’t stuffing hits for the troubled boys’ volleyball team, he’s launching the discus or heaving the shot.

Competing in two sports will be sure to keep Albers busy. And if he ever has any free time, he’ll be preparing for the football season, his main sport. Sure enough after the spring, he’ll delve fully into preparation as a lineman for the Mustangs.

Albers is bringing back memories of Nick Cabico, who competed in baseball and track and field as a junior at Costa Mesa in 2001. Cabico also lettered in football and basketball.

One thing might be different from these two athletes. Cabico went on to Chapman,  an NCAA Division III school, after graduating. Albers could very well be moving on to a Division I program for his football skills after his senior year.
