Tom Watson, whose remarkable runner-up finish in the British Open made for a compelling story, has committed to play in the Toshiba Classic, March 1-7 at Newport Beach Country Club.

Watson, 60, who has won 39 PGA Tour titles, is set to make his fifth Toshiba Classic appearance. He shot four-under-par 209 and tied for 22nd last year at the Toshiba Classic.

Argentina’s Eduardo Romero, who won the Toshiba Classic last year, is back in the tournament ready to defend his title. Hall of Famers Hale Irwin (the Toshiba Classic’s only two-time winner), Isao Aoki, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson and Lanny Wadkins have also committed to play in the Toshiba Classic, March 5-7.

Corona del Mar resident John Cook and Mark O’Meara, a former Costa Mesa City Championship winner, are also in the tournament.

Last year, Cook finished second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, the points system that determines the best golfer on the Champions Tour.
